Giardia is a protozoal organism that causes intestinal disease in dogs (as well as cats, humans and other mammals).  Dogs pick up giardia infections from the environment, primarily from standing water but it is also present in the soil, grass, and just about anywhere.  Giardia is extremely common in Colorado.  Clinical signs vary widely.  It is speculated up to 80% of dogs carry giardia, while only 10 to 20% show symptoms.  Signs can include mild diarrhea, occasion vomiting, voluminous watery diarrhea, or even severe illness with profuse vomiting.  This parasite can be diagnosed by performing a fecal examination.  Treatment is generally effective but some dogs require repeat therapy.  A vaccine is available that helps reduce clinical signs and aids in treatment.  The vaccine may also reduce or prevent further infections.
